It is only when our knowledge reflects in our conduct that we have truly become wise. We live the knowledge by becoming non-judgemental, tolerant and accepting of our reality. When the true import of the higher knowledge reaches us, our transformation is effortless. The purpose of higher knowledge is to help us transform ourselves to be able to transcend our ego and all the negative reactions that stem from it, such as – aggression, hasty judgement, impatience and intolerance. We expect people to subscribe to our way of living and thinking. We use it as a tool to dominate and exploit our environment.
It just becomes a means for us to enhance our self-image. However, unfortunately for most of us, this higher knowledge does not translate into our actions. Having thus acquired the knowledge, we sublimate our ego and align our actions in keeping with these principles.
It gives us an insight on the principles that govern the two forces of the cosmos, kama – desire and karma – fate. The Kama Sutra is neither exclusively nor predominantly a sex manual on sex positions but written as a guide to the art of living well, the nature of love, finding a life partner, maintaining one's love life, and other aspects pertaining to pleasure-oriented faculties of human life. Higher knowledge helps us introspect and observe the forces that govern the rational world. The ego-self operates on empirical truth. When looked at in its entirety, the 2,000-year-old book tells a different story.
While people tended to focus on the chapters involving sex positions, the bit that deals with physical acts of intimacy is just one section of this seven-part treatise. Published in the West in the late 1800s by British explorer and “orientalist” Richard Francis Burton, the Kama Sutra brought exotic notions of Indian sex to a restrained Victorian society. But there’s a problem: The book isn’t that sexy. It’s spawned an industry of merchandise since its popularization, from illustrated books to films, branded condoms, and magazine columns. In Sanskrit, sutra literally means thread but also refers to a text. Across cultures and continents, the Kama Sutra has a long-held reputation as one of the earliest texts on the art of sex.
